Located on the eastern edge of the Black Hills, Rapid City was founded in 1876. It has a history tied to railroads, mining, tourism (Mount Rushmore, Black Hills), and now serves as a regional urban centre in western South Dakota. The area has urban core, suburban neighborhoods, and then more rugged terrain and rural lands in adjoining areas. Housing includes older homes near downtown, typical suburban single-family homes (2–4 bedrooms), and some higher-end homes with Black Hills views. According to listings, the median listing price is around $349,900. A plausible build-estimate on urban fringe lots may be in the $300–400 k-plus range depending on site and view. Because it is second-largest city, its proximity to Sioux Falls is quite remote (~350 miles), so it functions independently in that region. The land around Rapid City can be semi-rural or rural if you venture outside the urban boundary.
